The Beaconsfield School A specialist Arts College

Growth Mindset

Psychologist Carol Dweck developed the concept of Growth Mindset. In recent years many schools including The Beaconsfield School have started using Growth Mindset with students to enable them to become more successful learners. The concept is really quite straightforward.

Students with a Fixed Mindset ‘Red Brain’ believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are fixed. When students with Fixed Mindsets fail at something, as all students inevitably will, they tell themselves they can’t or won’t be able to do it, or they make excuses to rationalise the failure.

Students will be learning about Growth Mindset in a variety of ways including assemblies, external speakers and of course in lessons. We would encourage you to discuss with your sons/daughters which mindset they consider themselves to have using the ‘Which mindset are you?’ poster. It is worth noting that at birth all babies have a Growth Mindset, by the time they are adults 40% have developed a Fixed Mindset. Our aim is to change ‘Red Brains’ to ‘Green’.

Below you will find a selection of resources you might like to use at home to support the work we are doing in school.
