Science at Key Stage 5

We run 3 separate science courses at Key Stage 5.

The BTEC Level 3 Applied Science course is an established course which is equivalent to 1 A Level.  In the past it has achieved excellent results- 66% Distinction */Distinction in 2019. The course consists of 4 units, 2 of which are externally assessed exams worth 41%, whilst 59% of the assessment is assignment based covering a wide range of chemical practical techniques and physiology of human body systems.

A level Biology attracts growing numbers and has improving results - 80% of the A level biologists achieved A* - D in August 2024. The course involved practical work in and outside the science laboratory. Similarly, to Key Stage 3 and 4.  A level Biology follows the AQA Kerboodle scheme of work.

The New Cambridge Advanced National in Applied Science – Extended certificate is being introduced in September 2025, to replace the BTEC Level 3 course.
For anyone who sees their future career in Science, the Cambridge Advanced National in Applied Science is an excellent starting point. It covers a wide range of topics across science with the optional units focusing two from Medical Physics, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Studies and Forensic Biology. 40% is externally assessed via exams and 60% assessed through assignments.

All three Science courses involve plenty of practical work with all practical skills assessed throughout the two years for the A Level subjects, or as an externally assessed practical unit for the BTEC. The courses are all expanding rapidly whilst still keeping very encouraging teacher student ratios.

All Key Stage 5 Science course are taught in 4 X 1 hour lessons a week.
